The SAMENWERKENDE FONDSEN CARIBEN grant we have received from this fund has had huge impact on the work we deliver around social justice. SAMENWERKENDE FONDSEN CARIBEN allows us to deliver impactful activities in KIA the national prison of Aruba. We have delivered workshops in sport, yoga, music, dance and art. We are supported by this fund with resourcing our regular weekly sessions and delivering impactful intensive projects which aim to empower young men and women in prison to regain value in themselves, to make personal development steps and prepare themselves to re-enter society following their time in prison.

TESTIMONIES
We’ve asked our volunteers Milicia, Wendy and Camilla to write a little piece about the activities they are doing with KIA and explains how this grant will support our activities and benefit KIA as well as opportunities for their personal development. Here are their testimonies:
Testimony from Milica Djukic :
I am Milica, a 22-year-old ESC volunteer (Tur Cos Ta Posibel) and I am currently volunteering in KIA, giving art and sports classes for three different departments. KIA is a place where activities are supported but infrastructure could definitely be improved. By addressing the infrastructural limitations, we would create an environment that promotes focused learning and fosters a sense of dignity and respect for both the inmates and the volunteers. As I have already been for four months and I see an impact that these classes are giving on the inmates. This grant will be of immense importance for the classes and class material, as well as for the personal development of the inmates. Grant would provide much-needed funding for classroom materials, such as textbooks, workbooks, and other educational resources. With access to these materials, we can design and implement engaging and effective educational programs that cater to the diverse learning needs of the inmates. This, in turn, would foster a positive learning environment that promotes curiosity,
critical thinking, and lifelong learning. The grant would enable us to introduce new educational programs that are tailored to the specific needs of the inmates. This would not only benefit the inmates in terms of acquiring new skills but also improve their chances of securing employment upon their release, reducing recidivism rates.
Testimony from Wendy Carvalho :
Hello my name is Wendy Carvalho, and I am currently volunteering in KIA delivering art, sports and dance classes to different departments. These classes give them the opportunity to express themselves in different ways and explore different things inside the prison facility. On the other side these activities give them the chance to look forward to do something, since their options are very restricted there. The money would help them to create bigger things which they could showcase outside of the prison once they are out. The materials would also help us as volunteers to plan bigger projects and show them ways to create Art with different mediums. Futhermore, the Sport material would give all of us the possibilities to do more sport disciplines.
Testimony from Camilla Salomon :
I am Camilla, I am 29 years old and I am currently volunteering in Kia two days a week. At the beginning I was offering yoga classes to four different departments and after two months I was giving the opportunity to start a dance project with the youth and women departments.
Inmates do not have any occupation during the day and when I first started to teach there in October they almost did not have any recreational activity at all. Things changed over the past few months thanks to Tur Cos Ta Posibel vontunteers coming to Kia to deliver art and sport classes. What is slowly but surely changing is the perception that people have in regards to the impact that such activities can have on the self-development of the inmates. Nontheless the resources offered by Kia itself are very limited and the infrastructures are often inadequate and in poor conditions. So far I have being counting on my own resources, bringing my personal speaker and Mp3 to the classes.
This grant will allow current as well as future volunteers to get the proper resources to run a specific activity with success. Moreover it can give us volunteers the chance to diversify our offer, to experiment more consequently to satisfying different interests.
