Construction & Mechanic Turing projects – Blackburn College

12/04/2026 – 25/04/2026

Tur Cos Ta Posibel recently hosted a group of construction and mechanic students, together with their tutors from Blackburn College, as part of their #TuringScheme mobility project in Aruba.

Over the course of two weeks, students engaged in hands-on technical work, gained professional experience in real working environments, and immersed themselves in the local culture. This mobility provided a unique opportunity to apply practical skills while contributing to ongoing projects across the island.

CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS: HANDS-ON WORK AND COMMUNITY IMPACT

Construction students focused on practical, on-site work, contributing to local infrastructure projects and developing their technical abilities in real conditions.

Community house project

During the first week, students worked on a community house, where they were involved in rebuilding and improving the roof structure.
Their tasks included:

  • Measuring and planning construction work
  • Fitting and assembling materials
  • Working collaboratively on-site to complete structural improvements

This experience allowed students to apply their knowledge in a real-life setting, strengthening their practical skills while contributing to a space used by the local community.

De Palm Island project

In the second week, students continued their placement at De Palm Island, where they supported improvements to the island’s infrastructure.
They:

  • Worked on rebuilding parts of the pier
  • Participated in a community cleaning day, contributing to the maintenance of the island

Alongside their work, students were invited to experience activities such as snorkeling, Sea Trek, and others, allowing them to connect with the environment they were helping to maintain.
We would like to thank De Palm Island for hosting and supporting the students throughout this experience.

MECHANIC PROJECTS: TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE IN UNIQUE ENVIRONMENTS

Mechanic students gained hands-on experience in both specialized and high-demand technical environments, expanding their knowledge across different types of machinery and systems.

Atlantis Submarine experience

During the first week, students had the opportunity to work alongside professionals involved with the Atlantis Submarine.
They were introduced to:

  • Routine technical checks and maintenance processes
  • Basic understanding of submarine systems and engines
  • Safety procedures within a highly specialized environment

This experience exposed students to a unique area of mechanical work, broadening their perspective beyond traditional vehicle maintenance.

De Palm garage placement

In the second week, students worked in the De Palm garage, supporting the maintenance and repair of vehicles used in daily operations.
They gained experience working with:

  • Quads and off-road vehicles
  • Jeeps used for island tours
  • Buses and transportation vehicles

Students assisted with inspections, repairs, and general maintenance, developing practical skills while understanding the importance of safety and reliability in the tourism sector.

CULTURAL EXPERIENCE AND EXPLORATION

Outside of their placements, students explored Aruba and experienced the island’s culture and natural environment.
They:

  • Participated in a Papiamento language session
  • Hiked to the Natural Pool (Conchi) and explored caves
  • Visited beaches and went snorkeling
  • Explored different parts of the island and local culture

These experiences allowed students to build strong connections, both within the group and with the island itself, creating a balance between professional development and cultural exchange.

A MEANINGFUL EXCHANGE

This project provided students with valuable hands-on experience, allowing them to develop technical skills, gain confidence in real working environments, and broaden their perspectives through international mobility.
We would like to thank Blackburn College, students, staff, and all partners involved for their trust and collaboration. It has been a pleasure hosting the students in Aruba and supporting their learning journey.
